At the least, you will want to set up someone to pick up your letters, and to give the appearance that your house isn't just sitting empty for weeks at a time.
Another thing you should do in advance is to make sure that your car is in good working condition. Most automobile service shops offer trip checks that include inspecting your brakes, tires, transmission, belts and hoses- all of the parts that could leave you trapped if something were to fail.
When you pack your car, make sure you include some essential tools. The last thing you need is to be stuck in the middle of nowhere, without any way to repair your car. A few of the necessary items you need to have in your tool kit include a 12v air compressor, simple wrench set, screwdrivers, hammer, basic tire repair kit, and your usual tools needed to replace your car tires. Also make sure you take some extra oil and water in case you have engine problems.
When you go to purchase the tools for your toolkit, you don't necessarily need to buy the most expensive. For example, many online vendors and higher end box stores carry an inexpensive 12 volt air compressor, as well as simple hand tool kits. While buying cheap air compressors might appear like a good idea, it's not. Make sure that your tools, particularly those that operate off of power, are of a decent quality.
Once you are done with the preliminaries, it is time to start packing. If you are in doubt where you are heading, it would be wise to bring a range of clothing choices, both for hot and cold weather conditions. That way, you won't end up in a blizzard with only Bermuda shorts to wear. But, if you know you are driving to the desert or the beach, be sure to plan accordingly. Pack lotion, cool clothes and several jugs of water for those long deserted stretches.
You should also remember to bring a camera and many rolls of film or flash memory cards to keep a record your journey. Once you return to the real world, you will only have photographs and memories to remind you of your trip. Also, be sure to bring along a wide range of music, as even your favorite songs can start to get old after many hours of driving.
