National Politics Primer, Political Left And Right
Were you aware that the term political left originated in France during the French revolution? After the King and Queen had been executed, France became a republic. The terms left and right evolved from the seating in the new parliament. These are even now used when talking about national politics nowadays though they are quite simplistic given our complicated political landscape. If you describe someone as being on the political left, that person is deemed as being more liberal in their views. A conservative would be described as being on the political right. Republicans that are likely to be conservative in their views are right wing whereas the Democrats are traditionally on the left side of the political arena.
As is usually the case with human beings, it really isn't that easy. Even with people who support the Dems there will be some who will be very liberal in their thinking and what they consider best policy. As an example you might have some Democrats who feel that abortion is wrong so would follow a typical right wing viewpoint on that matter. Or you might have other Liberals who feel that the war in Afghanistan is just and thus shelling out on defense should increase whereas the Democrats typically advocate decreased spending on army.
In national politics, just like all other things, there are always the extremes. You could have two people who are both deemed for being on the political left, yet they hold significantly different opinions on various issues. These different viewpoints are what makes political meetings so interesting and the study of politics so absorbing as well as complicated.
Barack Obama is a Democrat so would be described as being on the political left. Generally his party would support problems like legalizing same sex marriages and permitting doctor assisted suicide. The conservatives would seem to take a more spiritual point of view being pro life, anti same sex marriages and want to introduce even more religion in universities.
