Prepare A Healthier Snack By Using Your Own Hot Air Popcorn Popper
Many people will immediately turn up their nose if you tell them they have to work with a hot air popcorn popper to pop their popcorn. They've read many stories regarding how that variety of popcorn is bland and they want no part of it, not even wanting to give it a try. But to be honest, these tales all come from people who are accustomed to eating either that horrible microwave popcorn that's loaded with sodium and a lot of chemicals which are meant to resemble butter, or movie popcorn which actually is drenched in salt and butter. So they actually are not aware of what the POPCORN tastes like, only the toppings. And thus they're assuming that since popcorn popped in a hot air popcorn popper is more healthy for you, it should also taste awful compared to the "good" stuff they're used to.
Of course, it's true that if you pop your popcorn in a hot air popcorn popper, rather than using oil, it is more healthy for you, however that is only part of the story. You only use a small amount of oil whenever you pop popcorn and it's not sufficient to kill you anytime before long. And even if there are some oils which are better than others, it's still oil and it does have some reputation for naughtiness.. And that bad reputation is WHY many people want their popcorn popped in oil - it adds to the thrill! If you are likely to have a healthy snack like popcorn, the least that can be done is spice it up slightly and pop the stuff in oil!
If you were to compare plain popcorn - without any butter or salt or any other kind of seasoning - simply popcorn to popcorn, you would notice a difference in flavor between popcorn popped in oil and popcorn popped in a hot air popcorn popper. The popcorn made in the hot air popper seems like pure, fresh corn. It's light and airy and you taste corn whenever you eat it. When you pop popcorn in oil it turns out a little smaller, relatively denser and a bit chewier since it's taken in some of the moisture from the oil. It'll also soak up the flavour from the oil which will make it taste completely different than the air popped popcorn.
But this is my point. No matter how you pop it, popcorn is popcorn. The moment it comes out of the popper it's anyone's game! Add your butter and salt or your cinnamon and sugar. Go on and add your peanut butter or your chocolate. After which you don't even taste the popcorn anyway!
So if you are going to drench you popcorn in calories and cholesterol levels before you eat it anyway - and who doesn't! - then why not start with a more healthy base and pop your popcorn in a hot air popcorn popper? You'll save some calories anyway, and a few grams of cholesterol, and you will be beginning with a popcorn that just plain is more enjoyable before you even put all that other stuff on it. If you are going to eat chocolate coated caramel popcorn you owe it to yourself to lose all the calories and cholesterol you can. Just keep the bottle of oil on the counter. No one has to know but you!
