Television instead of radio became the basic way of both amusement and news dissemination and this influenced politics and also leisure enjoyment.
Medical breakthroughs involved the widespread use of vaccines that eradicated the scourge of smallpox globally and polio was mostly put under control too. Most of what had been known as the common childhood diseases have become anything but usual in the age of baby boomers. Organ transplants are no longer rare, blocked blood vessels in the heart can be repaired or bypassed, several cancers are treatable, and surgeries once thought to be impossible are now easy. Even test tube babies became possible with the birth of in vitro fertilization.
